Thank you so much for this site! People like Clara bow need to be remembered and cherished. I just love her. I think she is one of the most underrated movie maidens (or perhaps she just isn't as known as I would like!). She was a beauty and an inspiration. Such adorable, clever antics, gorgeous and expressive eyes, such raw talent... And such a tragic life. What a strong woman to overcome her childhood and such horrible exploitation in Hollywood. May she always be remembered. <3

Clara Bow, destined to become THE flapper of the 1920's, was born and raised in near poverty in Brooklyn, New York. She won a photo beauty contest which started a movie career of some 56 films. I see again personal appearance opening the door. This is getting to be a familiar story of the poor attractive young female being noticed by the older male money man and then things started rolling together to make pie. Why do women complain about not being equal to men when in reality most men are so weak that they are controlled by women? Figure that out and you might be a genius. She reached the top as the "It Girl" in 1927. With the advent of sound and the Great Depression her popularity soon faded. Also, adding to her problems were gambling debts, unpaid taxes, and several sensational court battles. She married a cowboy star at age 26 and retired from the screen at 28. Hmmm, this is what I would define as early retirement, because now days most people work until old age. Plagued by personal crisis, a weight problem and mental instability she never made another film. The star preferred playing poker with her cook, maid, and chauffeur over attending her movie premieres. Sounds like she was doing really great for a while.

Clara Bow's birthday is today! (She would have been 105!) She was the quintessential flapper, who had amazing talents, and mastered the art of pantomime beautifully! Unfortunately, many people focus on the negative aspects of the actress, for many angry people during the Depression felt like they had to place blame on the frivolous acts that were committed in the flapper era, and sadly, Clara Bow was the personification of the 1920s. But luckily, Clara's amazing talent is hard to ignore, she will forever "linger in the eye, long after the picture has gone..."
